When I start a new creative project, I usually have nothing more in mind than a sketch. My favorite point in the creative process is in the middle. When I’m at the point where I can see a destination, I’m inspired to keep up the momentum. When it comes to creating art, I like to combine different mediums together. It’s not uncommon for me to have used four different mediums in one artwork. My most recent mixed-media painting was created with watercolor, color pencil and pastel.
Like many artists, I like to draw and paint what I see and give it my own expression. As I developed as an artist, I sometimes compromised my vision in order to create art that I thought would appeal to everyone. Creating art with a broad focus seems simple, but for me it’s difficult. Working at random is easier for me than trying to produce something everyone likes. Art is unique because there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach.
I also write and illustrate books. I’ve enjoyed reading fiction since childhood. I’ve written over a dozen books including non-fiction and fiction. I have an appreciation for do-it-yourself books, especially those on the subjects of business and creativity.
My first book was an important milestone for me. Strictly G.I. commemorates my grandmother’s service in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corp during World War II. At the time of this writing, my upcoming epic fantasy fiction novel is at 100,000 words. It’s my first novel in this genre.
I consider myself a lifelong student, juggling my art and writing life with learning. I have a bachelor’s degree in graphic design with a minor in marketing in addition to a master’s degree in computer science. I enjoy working remotely and have done so since 2000, with a focus on creativity. I’ve designed ecommerce websites, developed mobile apps and built a small publishing company since becoming a self-published author.
Graphic Design – I’ve written, designed and illustrated dozens of books while finding the time to build two micro-businesses on a tight budget. I started as a graphic designer interning for a local graphic design firm. After graduation, I worked in the ad department at a local newspaper. In 2000, I became an independent designer. In 2015, I started my own handmade business.
Self Publishing – In 2011, I founded an independent publishing company, publishing dozens of my own books from start to finish.
